4x4 Wheeler Tires

Your Options For 4x4 Wheeler Tires

Tires are one of the most important parts of your vehicle. They are the ring-shaped covering that are fitted around the wheel rims to protect them and enhance better vehicle performance by providing a cushion that serves as shock absorber while maintaining a solid contact with the ground. Mud tires determine how well you can turn, accelerate and stop your vehicle.

A new 4WD owner should make sure they have good 4x4 wheeler tires to make sure their on road and off road driving experience are safe without any hassles. But with so many types of truck mud tires available in the market today, choosing the right one can be a daunting task. Start by considering how you are going to use the tires, how often you plan to drive your 4x4, the maximum size tire that will fit your vehicle, and your budget. Below are some options.

Named as one of the 10 most influential off-road tires for its “outstanding off-road traction and race-proven performance,” the BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A is perfect for 4WD enthusiasts who want a serious off-road traction tire. It has maximized steering control in deep dirt, off road mud and sand. It has a solid tread wear performance and street manner. However, you should know that its 3 ply sidewalls are prone to sharp rocks as compared to MT (mud terrain) tires that have sidewall protection. This tire brand has aggressive good looks and incredible rock climbing traction and is being sold for around $250.

Designed for ultra performance on off road mud, the Dick Cepek Mud Country Radial Tire by Mickey Thompson is a great mud king tire. This has 3 ply sidewalls and side biters for tough protection against puncture, stepped tread for self cleaning by releasing the mud instead of packing it in between lugs, extra wide footprint for better traction and even wear and with siped tread lugs for better grip on smooth and icy surfaces. You can usually get them for around $230.

For those who wish to find a combination of good mud and off-road tire qualities with improved paved road manners, you can check out Interco Tires’ SSR Series Super Swamper Radial TSL (three stage lug) tire, price of which starts at $220. The TSL design has shown the ultimate performance not only in mud but also on rocks, deep snow, on loose terrain and on changing wood trails. This cheap mud tire's design also incorporates two rows of alternating v-shaped lugs with sipes that contribute to a better grip even on wet roads and icy conditions.

Another mud tire worth considering is the Pro Comp Xtreme Mud Terrain Tire which boasts of its proven tri-ply construction and latest innovation, the 10 Degree Radial Angle Technology that provides 2 radial polyester body plies and one outer ply angled at 10 degrees. This offers maximum puncture resistance notwithstanding its good performance on or off road. In addition, it has two layers of opposed angle steel belting and seamless layer that make it one of the toughest tires on the road. Its price starts at around $180 for the 30x10.50 R15.

Tip of the day:

If you get stuck in the mud, don't continue to spin the wheels in hopes of getting unstuck. Find rocks or gravel and put it near the wheel and try to rock the car out by pressing gently on the gas, then releasing.
