Choosing The Right Kind Of Off Road Truck Tires

When it comes to driving off the road, trucks are king. However don't expect to just be able to start driving off-road on any surface condition without reading about off-roading information first. Your truck should be fitted with the right kind of tires for the kind of terrain you will be driving on. Off-road tires are generally made for driving on a variety of surfaces such as mud, snow, and sand, as well as uneven surfaces such as rocks, forests and deserts.

It is important to keep traction in mind when researching tires. Traction is what helps your tires get a hold on the surface of the ground. In water, mud, sand, and rocks, it can be difficult to maintain good traction. If your goal is to primarily improve traction, then look into a traction differential locker for stock truck tires.

If you know the exact type of terrain you will be off roading on, then great! You are already ahead of the game. Truck tires are manufactured for different kinds of terrain. Their tread patter can vary dramatically to help you get better traction depending on the type of terrain you are driving on. There are also all-terrain tires available that can be driven on city streets as well as off-road. However, keep in mind if you opt for an all terrain tire, their design is not specific to one type of condition and they might perform poorly on extreme surfaces, have a bumpy ride, and be noisy on city streets. Extreme tires can specialize in driving on mud, sand, rocky surfaces, as well as snow.

You'll first want to determine if you want an all terrain tire or a terrain specific tire, like mud tires. Then determine the size of the rims and tires by looking at the truck owners manual or on the actual tires you already have on your truck. 33 inch tires are very popular with truck owners as they are some of the largest tires available. Keep in mind that large is not always better. You'll want to get what's right for your vehicle and your needs. Now that you know the terrain and size of the tire you want, you've narrowed your search down significantly.

Determining a specific brand can be a little more challenging. Most people choose a tire brand based on price, rating, and reviews. Visit amazon to research different models that might work for your needs. They have many name brand manufacturers, a star rating, customer reviews, and prices. If you're looking for cheap off road tires, be sure to also research the quality of the tire. You don't want to get stuck with a lemon.

Here are a few off road truck tires that we recommend:

The Super Swamper SX Off-road Tires from Interco provide the kind of strength, traction and protection that the brand has become famous for on any kind of driving condition. These tires are designed for the worst off-road conditions and can stand up to sever scuffing in ruts as well as snagging on rocks and roots. When it comes to playing or working hard in your truck or jeep, they are perfect for rock-crawling and timber running, among other things. With tire diameters of 29" to 38", these tires are available to fit 15", 16" and 16.5" wheels. Featuring aggressive tri-lug pattern, 6 ply construction with dual belts under the tread, and sidewall lugs that provide the best protection in addition to aiding in climbing out of ruts fast. The Super Swamper SX Off-road Tires retail for around $175 each.

The Baja MTZ Radial Specialty Light Truck Tire from Mickey Thompson provides superior strength and durability in an aggressive mud terrain radial. There are a wide variety of sizes available for bot stock and lifted vehicles. The smooth ride these tires provide help reduce the kind of wear that typical off-road tires receive. Self cleaning lugs do not pick up any rocks while side biters give better traction. Smooth and wet surfaces aren't a problem as the siped treads provide a better grip. The deep shoulder lugs also provide more grip and at the same time lend to a bolder look for your truck. Sidewalls are made from a cut-resistant construction while tread are a 6 ply construction that add to its already superior strength and toughness off the road. All in all, the Baja MTZ Radial Specialty Light Truck Tire can provide high mileage and a smoother ride, traction in mud and snow with self-cleaning high void lugs, as well as aggressive traction from both the shoulder lugs and side biters. The Baja MTZ Radial Specialty Light Truck Mud Tire is available for around $550 for the 38 x 15.50R 20LT.

Tip of the day:

If you get stuck in the mud, don't continue to spin the wheels in hopes of getting unstuck. Find rocks or gravel and put it near the wheel and try to rock the car out by pressing gently on the gas, then releasing.
